Yes, anti virus is a requirement today when using a computer on the internet. Windows Defender is a bundled software product that protects from spyware/pop ups ONLY. This is a critical difference as it does not provide protection from Viruses, etc.
As there are a few free Anti Virus alternatives, I would recommend one of those (I use them myself) instead of paying for a subscription.
    The most common are:
AVG Free AAnti virus – http://free.grisoft.com
    Avast! Antivirus – http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht…
    ClamAV – http://w32.clamav.net/
Whatever you do, however, to NOT download “Anti virus 2009″

    Good Luck!

you do not need aditional antivirus software, though people have deleated the vista antivirus software and downloaded new one. my father downloaded edet for $170 I dont think you need it because my vista computer has not had any viruses since i got it 6 months ago

Norton is a huge waste of resources . Dont run the Windows one, click it off and use Zone Alarm , it is free and pc magazine swears by it. as do i .
